Why You Should Review Your Will Regularly

So often, I’ve come across people who’ve assumed that they’ve made a Will  and now they can forget about it. They’re almost always in trouble when they  contact me.

The reality is that time changes circumstances, and that includes what you  assumed when making a Will. Perhaps you’ve had another child who isn’t  named as an heir. Maybe your relationship has changed with someone  named in your Will. Maybe someone you named as an Executor is no longer  able to carry out the task.

It’s important to revisit your Will every few years. You might not need to make  any changes — but, if you do, contact us to find out how to go about altering  or replacing it.

Life Events That Should Trigger a Will Review

While a general review every three to five years is a sensible habit, certain life events should prompt an immediate look at your Will. These include getting married or divorced, having a child or grandchild, a significant change in your financial situation (such as buying a property or receiving an inheritance), the death of someone named in your Will, or a change in your relationship with a named beneficiary or executor.

Updating a Will does not always mean starting from scratch — sometimes a simple codicil (a formal amendment) is enough. At Riverwise Estate Planning, we advise on whether your existing Will needs a minor update or a full rewrite. You can read our dedicated guide on how often you should update your Will, or find out more on the GOV.UK guide to making a Will. Contact us to arrange a free Will review. It is a straightforward conversation and, if your existing Will is already in good shape, we will simply tell you so.
